The baseline changes everything here. Against a daily bottled-water habit (~0.09 kg CO2e per 500 ml PET bottle), the steel bottle wins within weeks. Against tap water in a glass you already own, it never wins — the glass had no footprint to beat.

UNEP's LCA meta-review puts the carbon break-even at roughly 10–30 uses — a few weeks for a daily bottled-water buyer. But on metal-resource-depletion metrics it takes hundreds of uses, and versus tap water in an existing glass there is no break-even at all.

  • Washing dominates: heating wash water is often the largest lifetime contributor in bottle LCAs
  • Frequent hot hand-washing is the worst case — worse than full, efficient dishwasher loads — and most insulated bottles are hand-wash-only

Cleanliness: Worth attention

Studies find tens of thousands of bacteria per mL in bottles that aren't washed daily, and coliform bacteria in over 20% of sampled bottles. Biofilm hides in threads, straws, and gaskets. Honest hygiene means daily washing — which is exactly the energy the LCAs penalize.

For the lifetime claim to hold

Wash daily (efficiently — full dishwasher loads or cool hand-wash), disassemble and deep-clean the lid weekly, and keep this one bottle for years. Every replacement or duplicate resets the payback clock.
